Networking and facilitated discussion on the Visual Arts in Coventry
4-7pm 23 March 2016, 4th Floor, Eaton House CV1 2FJ
We are delighted to be working in association with Wendy Law at Turning Point West Midlands to offer this event to visual artists working in Coventry. To book a place at the event contact Sheridan on Sheridan@coventry-artspace.co.uk.
Many will be aware that our Director Laura Elliot went on maternity leave in November last year. We are delighted to announce that on 18th December last she and Michael were blessed with the arrival of a bouncing baby boy who now goes by the name of Ezra Elliot-Mayhew. Artspace Trustee Mindy Chillery has meanwhile taken up the role of Interim Director. We are also delighted to welcome two apprentices, Sheridan Henderson, Events and Marketing Apprentice and Klaudia Lombara, Design Apprentice. Mindy, Sheridan and Klaudia are all now based on the 4th Floor, Eaton House, 1 Eaton Road, CV1 2FJ.
On a less happy note, regretfully the financial situation of the charity is such that we have had to make the role of Finance Manager and Company Secretary redundant. As everyone will be aware there is currently huge pressure on City Council finances and consequently many arts organisations in the city have had to accept cuts to their core budgets. Artspace is no exception and so this was not a post that was sustainable in the long term. Jackie Stevens left the organisation on 31st January after over 16 years of dedicated service. We were very sorry to see Jackie go and extremely grateful for her hard work over the years. We wish her well for the future.
The Artsapce Building – 16 Lower Holyhead Road
Due to the rising costs of running this building and a re-focusing of Artspace activities, it was decided to relinquish the lease at the end of March 2016. However, we are really pleased that some of the studio holders are keen to take over the lease and some felt that Artspace was making the wrong decision. To enable a o to enable a smooth and more sustainable transition to the next phase it was agreed that Artspace will remain leaseholder of the building until 25th June 2016.
We hope to make good use of the building between now and the end of June to ensure that arts events are held there. Let us know if you have an event or activity that you think we might be able to host.
Visualising the City / City Arcadia
The airwaves are back on! Artspace would like to apologise to Visualising the City / City Arcadia followers and participants who have missed seeing regular news and updates from the project. BUT! After a month of review and re-evaluation, we are delighted to announce that we are back in business.

32 City Arcade
We are really excited about the potential of the 32 City Arcade space and the opportunity it provides to increase the presence of visual arts in Coventry. We will be using the venue to present the City Arcadia commissions in the summer, but we also have plans for the space before and after that. From 14th March we are welcoming The Pod into the space with their exhibition Scratch the Surface: EndsllBegins. This exhibition will run until 27th March. We are really pleased to be able to support The Pod with their Festival. Find out more about this event here www…..
Following this we are intending to run workshops for the public based on the themes of the City Arcadia project and then to be using the venue to present some of the City Arcadia work. Our intention is to continue to run the venue as a much needed exhibition space in the City. We are also looking at the possibility of using shops in the City Arcade for temporary artist studio space and/or pop up exhibitions.
Artists’ Networking and Symposium
We have been working closely with Wendy Law at Turning Point West Midlands to design an Artists’ networking and discussion event event on 23rd March 2016 4-7pm. There will be an input from Coventry grown artist Lucy Hutchinson and also from Martin Green whose work is to be included in the exhibition at 32 City Arcade. Wendy has agreed to facilitate this meeting from which we would hope to gain artist sign up to key priorities as well as a joined strategy for going forward.
Artspace is also keen to run an Artists’ Symposium alongside the City Arcadia commissions in May/June and is currently raising funds for this. This event would bring speakers from within the city and beyond and would be an opportunity to build on the ideas and priorities emerging from the networking event as well as providing a stimulating artistic event with input from artists on their practice.
